South Western Railway has questioned the netizens by posting a picture of the mark 'X' made on the back of the train compartment. South Western Railway has asked 'Do you know what the X symbol on the coach means?'

 

What is the meaning behind 'X' in Railways?

The meaning behind the 'X' in railways is that it indicates the termination of a particular train. This is a signal to the station guard that no other coach has been left behind or will be joining the train. Because of this, the mark is always written behind the last compartment of the train. Its color is yellow or white.

This post by South Western Railway has got over 1,000 likes and has been retweeted almost 100 times. The Ministry of Railways has also explained the meaning of X on the last compartment of the train. In March this year, the Ministry of Railways shared a tweet with a picture of a yellow 'X' on a train and asked people if they knew what the 'X factor' stood for.

The ministry tweeted, 'Did you know? The letter 'X' on the last coach of the train indicates that the train has passed without leaving any coach. Railway authorities get confirmation that the train has passed completely and no coach has been left behind.
