Actor and film director Manoj Kumar died at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. The actor is especially known for his patriotic films. He is also known as 'Bharat Kumar'. After his death, a wave of mourning ran across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Manoj Kumar's death as a great loss for the country.

 

He wrote on 'X', 'Deeply saddened by the demise of the great actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was especially remembered for his patriotism and his passion. Made a mark for himself in Hindi cinema

Born on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar (Punjab) as Harikrishna Goswami, Manoj Kumar made a mark for himself in Hindi cinema. His iconic roles in films like 'Shaheed', 'Upkaar' and 'Rang De Basanti' were deeply rooted in patriotic sentiments. Throughout his career, Manoj Kumar was known for both his acting and direction in films based on the spirit of national pride and unity.

 

Honored with Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award

 

Manoj Kumar's contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered. He was awarded many prestigious awards. These include a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards in several categories. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1992 for his immense contribution to the field of art. His legacy was further enhanced when he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. This is the highest honor in Indian cinema.

Filmmaker Ashok Pandit also expressed his grief over the demise of the veteran actor. He said, 'It is sad to inform you all that the Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, our inspiration, the legend of the Indian film industry, Manoj Kumar ji is no more with us. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri after being unwell for a very long time. It is a great loss, you will be missed a lot.'

He further said, 'We all used to meet him occasionally. He was always full of life, always happy and the whole industry will miss him. A great soul like him, a great producer like him, will never be in our industry. Goodbye Manoj ji, goodbye.'
