It is the year 1942. Hitler's 300,000 Nazi soldiers were marching toward the city of Stalingrad after the Russian occupation of Leningrad. It was difficult to save the city. Then the Soviet government ordered mobilization. Millions of Russians were enlisted in the army and sent to war. The streets of the city were deserted with men.
After 80 years, the same situation is happening again in Russia. Men are less visible from city streets. Those who are seen are being caught by the police. Will know in Bhaskar Explainer where are the men of Russia disappearing?
It is being claimed on social media that police stationed outside a metro station in Moscow are catching men and recruiting them into the army.
More than 7 lakh Russian men left the country
After the announcement of mobilization, Russian men began to leave the country. In three weeks their number increased to more than 7 lakhs. 2 lakh went to Kazakhstan, 1.19 lakh to European countries, and 49 thousand to Georgia. Apart from this, millions of men have also migrated to countries like Armenia, Azerbaijan, Israel, and Argentina. However, the Putin government has opposed this data.
According to the BBC, the Novaya Gazette newspaper has claimed that under partial mobilization, Russia is recruiting not more than 3 lakh but more than one million men in the army. The newspaper says that a paragraph of the order of the Russian government has not been issued, in which it has been said.
Know from three stories the reasons why men leave Russia
The NYT has published the story of three women in a report, which makes the reasons clear.
1. Ola, manager of Chop-Chop Salon in Moscow, says that the salon was usually very crowded, but now it is empty. Even his partner has left the country for fear of being sent to war.
2. The 33-year-old photographer Stanislava told that she threw a birthday party. During this, when she started looking for male companions to carry some luggage, she realized that there were fewer men around her now.
3. A woman named Liza told that her husband was a lawyer in a multinational company. He had no idea how to fight the war, but one day the police gave him the notice to join the army. After this, her husband decided to leave the country. She is not the only woman whose husband is leaving his family and going to another country these days. The number of such families is in lakhs.
Tickets are full due to migration, and it is difficult to handle the traffic
According to a report in The Guardian, all tickets for next week's direct flights from Moscow to Istanbul, Yerevan, Tashkent, and Baku have been sold out. Three of these cities Yerevan, Tashkent, and Baku are the capitals of Armenia, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan respectively, while Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. All these countries give visa-free entry to Russians.
At the same time, the price of a flight from Moscow to Dubai has gone up to 3.70 lakh rubles i.e. 5 lakh rupees, which usually ranges from 30 thousand to 2 lakh rupees.
The arrival of a large number of Russians on the Russia-Georgia and Russia-Mongolia borders has also disrupted the traffic system on the border. Finland is the only country in the European Union that gives visa-free entry to Russians.
Russia is already struggling with a shortage of men
After the war, the way the number of men in Russia is continuously decreasing, which is a cause of even more concern for Russia. This is because, in 2018, the Russian Federal State Statistics Service released a report saying that the total population of Russia is 14.69 million. It has a population of 6.81 crore males while that of 7.88 crore females. In such a situation, it is clear that the direct impact of the decrease in the number of men is sure to fall on all the sectors of the country.
The impact of the shortage of men on the business
Because of the shortage of men in the capital Moscow, on Monday, the mayor of Moscow announced that men from the capital would no longer be sent to war. But, by then it was too late.
Many businesses in Moscow are either handled by women or have come to a complete standstill. There is a state of recession in the country. Hotels, restaurants, malls, and other commercial activities decreased by 30%.
Russia's biggest lending bank closed 529 branches in September, according to the NYT and Kommersant newspaper. Malls and squares of the city are seen as empty.
So far we have talked about Russia, and now know how is the situation in Ukraine.
Like Russia, the number of men fighting wars in Ukraine is steadily decreasing. According to the DW report, there is silence in the cities of Ukraine as well. Men are rarely seen in the streets and markets. Most of the men living in the country are either on the border or are engaged in their business. This can be understood from two things…
First: The Ukrainian government has allowed women and children to leave the country, but there is a complete ban on men leaving the country.
Second: Like in Russia, in Ukraine, men between the ages of 18 and 60 are being recruited into the army. Not only this, men from Ukraine and foreign countries are also joining the army as volunteer soldiers.
Like Russia, Ukraine also has more women than men.
According to the World Population Prospects, the total population of Ukraine in 2021 was 43.4 million. It had a population of 2 crore males and 2.34 crore females.
