Today—May 2nd—between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM, if you suddenly receive an emergency message on your phone accompanied by a loud beep, do not panic. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Government of India, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is conducting a mock drill for the ‘Cell Broadcast Alert System.’
The first alert was sent earlier today, leaving many people confused about what action they should take. This is merely a test designed to ensure that, in the event of any future disaster or emergency, people can be informed in a timely manner. Let’s understand some key points regarding this initiative.
What to do when you receive an alert?
Do not panic – This is strictly a test message; therefore, there is absolutely no need to be alarmed or frightened.
Read the message – Carefully read the pop-up message that appears on your screen; it will clearly state that this is a ‘Mock Drill.’
Click ‘OK’ – Once you have viewed the message, you can dismiss it by clicking the ‘OK’ button provided on the screen.

Key Features of the Alert System
Loud Sound – This message arrives with a distinct sound and vibration, ensuring it is audible even if your phone is in silent mode.
Network-Based – It does not require an internet connection; instead, it reaches your phone directly via the cellular network.
Multilingual – The government can send these alerts in regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English.
Important Points to Avoid Confusion
You do not need to call anyone or share any personal information in response to this message. This trial is being conducted on a random basis across various states and networks; therefore, some individuals may receive it earlier, while others may receive it later.
Do not place your trust in any misinformation circulating on social media; this is a completely government-regulated and secure process.
