Hardik Pandya Returns After 5 Months! India A Squad Announced, Gaikwad & Padikkal Named Captains

Hardik Pandya is set to make his return to competitive cricket after nearly five months after being named in the India A squad for the upcoming home series against Australia A. However, the star all-rounder's participation remains subject to fitness clearance.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India A squads for the Australia A series on September 9. The tour will feature two multi-day matches followed by three one-day games, with all five matches scheduled to be played in Puducherry.

Pandya has been included in the 15-member India A one-day squad. His selection marks an important step in his return after an extended injury layoff. He has not featured in competitive cricket since the 2026 IPL and has been undergoing rehabilitation and fitness work at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Hardik Pandya's Fitness Remains Key

Pandya's comeback will depend on his fitness clearance. The all-rounder has been dealing with injury concerns during his rehabilitation, including a quadriceps issue that delayed his return to competitive cricket.

He had earlier been included in India's ODI squad for the Afghanistan series, also subject to fitness clearance, but was subsequently ruled out after failing to recover in time. The latest India A selection gives Pandya another opportunity to regain match fitness ahead of a potential return to the senior Indian team.

Pandya's inclusion is particularly significant because he has not played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2026 season. His India A stint could provide valuable match practice if he receives the required fitness clearance.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to Captain India A ODI Team

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed captain of the India A one-day side, with Devdutt Padikkal named vice-captain.

The ODI squad includes several players pushing for opportunities at the senior level, including Sai Sudharsan, Priyansh Arya, Rajat Patidar, Naman Dhir, Nishant Sindhu, Vipraj Nigam and Arshin Kulkarni.

Kumar Kushagra and Prabhsimran Singh have been selected as wicketkeepers, while Hardik Pandya, Arshad Khan, Gurjapneet Singh and Yash Thakur form part of the bowling options.

Devdutt Padikkal Named Multi-Day Captain

Devdutt Padikkal will lead the India A side in the two multi-day matches against Australia A, with Sai Sudharsan appointed his deputy.

The multi-day squad includes Aman Mokhade, Ayush Pandey, Yash Rathod and Shaik Rasheed among the batting options. Kumar Kushagra and N Jagadeesan are the wicketkeepers.

Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian provide all-round options, while the bowling attack includes Tushar Deshpande, Anshul Kamboj, Praful Hinge, Nachiket Bhute and V Vyshak. Vyshak's selection, like Pandya's, is subject to fitness clearance.

Three Players Receive Maiden India A Multi-Day Call-Ups

Aman Mokhade, Ayush Pandey and Shaik Rasheed have received maiden call-ups to the India A multi-day squad for the Australia A series.

The selection is part of the selectors' effort to provide young domestic performers with exposure to higher-level cricket across both multi-day and white-ball formats.

India A vs Australia A Schedule

The India A series against Australia A will begin with the first multi-day match in Puducherry on September 22.

September 22-25: 1st Multi-Day Match — Puducherry

September 29-October 2: 2nd Multi-Day Match — Puducherry

October 6: 1st ODI — Puducherry

October 9: 2nd ODI — Puducherry

October 11: 3rd ODI — Puducherry

The entire series will be played in Puducherry and will conclude with the third one-day match on October 11.

Hardik Pandya's Comeback in Focus

With Hardik Pandya included in the India A ODI squad, subject to fitness clearance, the Australia A series could become an important step in the all-rounder's road back to competitive cricket.

For India, Pandya's return to full fitness would provide another valuable all-round option, while the India A series will also give Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdutt Padikkal and several emerging players an opportunity to make their case for future senior-team selection.
