
Mohd Zubair, the co-founder of fact-checking website Alt News, has been arrested by the Delhi Police for hurting religious sentiments. He has been sent to one-day police custody. According to the police officials of the Special Cell, a case was registered against Mohammad Zubair after receiving a complaint from the Twitter handle in June. The complaint alleged that Mohammad Zubair had posted the objectionable picture to deliberately insult the god of a particular religion. His tweet was being retweeted. His followers and social media organizations started spreading the tweet in a big way.

Zubair hails from Bengaluru and rose to fame by running a Facebook page parodying Subramanian Swamy, who filed a complaint on Facebook requesting the deletion of the fake account. At that time, Zubair worked as an IT executive. After this, in the year 2017, Zubair along with Prateek Sinha launched Alt News as a fact-checking website. However, a few days later, both came under constant criticism for their alleged favoritism. Zubair had often come under the target of the police for his objectionable tweets. Last year, a case was registered against Zubair by the Delhi Police on a complaint from NCPCR citing a tweet shared by him on August 6, 2020. In his controversial tweet, Zubair had shared a picture of a minor girl getting into an argument with her father during an online fight. The arrest was made after interrogation on Monday
On Monday, Mohammad Zubair was called to the IFSC office in Dwarka for questioning. During interrogation, his tweet was found to be objectionable. After that, he was arrested. A case has been registered against the accused under IPC sections 153 (act likely to cause disturbance to the atmosphere and cause a nuisance) and 295 (insulting an object considered sacred by any society) of the IPC. Police say that the accused is neither cooperating in the interrogation nor is giving his mobile and laptop. After checking the mobile and laptop, it will be known when the accused had made the controversial tweet and how many tweets have been made so far.
