Nigeria Floods: Nigeria floods havoc, death toll crosses 600

Floods have wreaked havoc in Nigeria. More than 600 people have died in the worst floods in a decade. At the same time, more than 13 lakh people have had to leave their homes and take shelter in safe places.

 

States were not ready for floods

According to Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadia Umar Farouq, more than 600 people died as of 16 October 2022 due to the severe floods. Last week the death toll was 500. He said that some states were not prepared for the floods, due to which many people lost their lives.

 

More than 82 thousand houses destroyed

Sadia Umar Farooq said that the floods have caused great destruction. He reported that more than 82 thousand houses and about 110,000 hectares (272,000 acres) of agricultural land have been destroyed, while the rainy season usually starts around June.

In 2012, floods in Nigeria killed 363 people, while more than 2.1 million people had to leave their homes. Rice growers have warned that the flood could also affect rice prices, affecting 200 million people. The import of rice into Nigeria has been banned.
