Pakistani generals insist on early elections to appoint new army chief

Many rumors are going on about who will be the next Army Chief. There is already a tense atmosphere in the political circles since the ouster of former PM Imran Khan. However, the army does not seem to be happy with Imran Khan's statements. Pakistan's call for general elections has grown rapidly in recent months, and it appears the 'army chief' has put an end to the controversy and will announce an early election so that he can appoint the next army chief.

PTI president demands dissolution of the assembly

Islam Khabar, citing reliable sources, said that the army was in discussions to select a political and financial leader before the announcement of the election. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced that he will start a 'protest march in Islamabad on May 25. Presenting his demands, the PTI president said he was demanding a date for fresh elections and the dissolution of the assembly.

In response, the interim government led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has launched a campaign of vengeance against PTI leaders such as Shireen Mazari and journalists who supported Imran Khan.

As the prime minister warned, thousands of Imran Khan's supporters are already on the streets and motivated enough to take over the state's institutions, which could lead to civil war.

Imran Khan got a warning

In this regard, the generals have already warned the Imran Khan Brigade to refrain from pelting mud. Shirin Mazari was involved in an incident in one of his games. Journalists who supported Imran have also been accused of sedition. Media officials have issued a stern warning against derogatory references to judges and generals.

In the next few months, the fear of gumboots is likely to come into vogue again, with anonymous threats and kidnappings.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said general elections are likely to be held earlier

Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said in the past that there is a possibility of holding general elections before the appointment of the new army chief. Asif was quoted by Dawn newspaper citing an interview given to BBC Urdu that we may hold elections before November before the appointment of the (new) army chief. At that time there would be a caretaker government. It is also possible that the caretaker government is gone and the new government (in power) may be in place before November.
