He joined this infantry only because of his stubbornness. Colonel's brother Sandeep Singh said that at the time of joining the army when he was asked which battalion he would join, he had said that he would join the battalion 12 Sikh Light Infantry of his grandfather Sheetal Singh and father Lakhmir Singh.
Manpreet's grandfather had three brothers - Sheetal Singh, Sadhu Singh, and Trilok Singh. All three served in the Indian Army. Sheetal Singh took part in three wars from the India-Pakistan partition till his retirement from the army. Shital Singh had four sons. Three of them joined the army.
Father had retired from the post of Havildar
The late father of martyr Colonel Manpreet. Lakhmir Singh was a soldier in the army. Retired as Havildar in the 12 Sikh Light Infantry. After that worked as a security supervisor at Punjab University. When Manpreet died of a brain hemorrhage in 2014, Manpreet's younger brother Sandeep Singh got the job in his place. Manpreet has a sister.
Sandeep said that when they were young, they used to see their father saluting officers senior to him. Manpreet had thought since then that he would one day become an officer in the army. Then when Papa will stand with him, the same officers will salute him, whom he used to salute then.
Sister said- While preparing for the practical, I had written that I would join the army.
Sister Sandeep Kaur said that her elder brother wanted to join the army from the beginning. While preparing his practical in childhood, he had once written in it that he would join the army. He was very hardworking and smart in his studies. There was a talk with the brother on Rakhi, then he asked him to come soon.
