During the ongoing war with Ukraine, Russia is continuously banning social media platforms. Today Russia has banned Instagram access. In such a situation, users there will no longer be able to access Instagram. Russia has blocked Instagram alleging that it is being used to increase violence against Russian soldiers.
Earlier in March, Russia banned Facebook and Twitter. Russia took this step as part of extensive efforts to control the information available about the military operation in Ukraine. Media regulator Roskomnadzor said in a statement that they are closing access to Instagram because the platform is promoting violence against Russian civilians and soldiers.
Instagram ban decision
Russia decided to ban Instagram after Facebook, which is now Meta, changed the rules regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meta had said in its statement that it was changing the hate speech policy in protest against the Russian attack on Ukraine. Under this, Russia allowed its users that they can speak openly against President Putin on social media platforms.
Popular among Russian youth
Facebook and Instagram are widely used in Russia. It is the most popular social media platform among Russian youth. Regarding the Instagram ban, Instagram head Adam Mosseri tweeted, "Instagram will be blocked in Russia from Monday. This decision will cut off 80 million people of Russia from each other and the rest of the world, because 80 of Russia's people Percentage people follow Instagram accounts outside their country. This is wrong."
