Following tensions between Iran and the US-Israel, gas, petrol, and diesel are being experienced worldwide. Fuel reserves across countries have dwindled. Meanwhile, India is also experiencing gas shortages. Therefore, the Indian government has implemented the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
What is the ECA?
The Essential Commodities Act, 1955, regulates the production, supply, and distribution of essential commodities. This law controls prices by preventing hoarding and black marketing. Under this law, the government can set stock limits.
What did the government say in the order?
The gazette issued by the central government stated that LPG is an essential fuel used for cooking in Indian homes, and ensuring its consistent availability is essential. Therefore, refineries and petrochemical plants will no longer be able to use the gas for petrochemical products or other industrial purposes. This simply means that the gases will be used directly to make LPG, so that there is no shortage of cooking gas in homes.
