Shreya Ghosal: Shreya pays musical tribute to Zubeen Garg, fans get emotional at Women's World Cup ceremony

During the break of the India-Sri Lanka match at the Women's World Cup, Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal gave a 13-minute musical tribute to the late singer Zubeen. The stadium held approximately 25,000 spectators. Shreya performed a rendition of Zubeen's hit songs, including the World Cup theme song "Bring It Home." Ghoshal also sang Zubeen's famous song, which moved fans.

According to PTI, the stadium echoed with chants of "Joy Zubeen Da." Fans also waved banners paying tribute to the late singer. During the Women's World Cup, Shreya sang Zubeen Garg's famous song "Mayabini Ratir Bukut," concluding the ceremony. Zubeen had also wished that fans sing this song after his passing. The cricket stadium also resonated with this song. His untimely death in Singapore on September 19th sparked an outpouring of grief in Assam.

10,000 free passes given

The Assam Cricket Association themed the opening ceremony in honor of Zubeen Garg. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, "This match is being held amid two circumstances: mourning for Zubeen Garg and the extreme celebration of Durga Puja. We wanted the opening ceremony to pay tribute to this son of the soil."

 

He added, "Five thousand tickets were specially reserved for members of the Zubeen Garg Fan Club, while 10,000 free passes were distributed so that Zubeen's fans could be a part of this special moment."

 

Fans said, "Zubeena will always be our icon."

A 23-year-old hotel management student said, "Zubeena will always be with us. He is Assam's number one icon. We may not have seen Bhupen Hazarika, but Zubeen was one of us." He was very close to our hearts and was connected to us.' Even in the stadium, when Shreya Ghoshal was singing Jubin's song, the fans were looking very emotional.
