New Delhi: The Supreme Court heard today on the migrant laborers facing an economic crisis in lockdown. The court today first considered the situation of the laborers living in Delhi and its nearby cities. They have been instructed to provide ration, food, and return facility to the village. At the same time next week, the situation of laborers in other states will be heard.
The bench of Supreme Court Justices Ashok Bhushan and MR Shah considered that the migrant laborers were badly affected by the slowing industrial activity in the second wave of Corona. Private transporters are exploiting workers who want to return to their villages by charging more rent. Because of this, the court has directed the Central, Delhi, UP, and Haryana governments to-
* Dry ration (grain) should be made available to the migrant laborers. Even if no one has an identity card, he should not be denied ration.
* Those laborers living in NCR cities want to return to their villages, they should be allowed to go by road or rail.
* Community kitchen should be started for migrant laborers living in NCR cities. Food should be given to his family 2 times a day.
Several instructions were issued
On June 9 last year, the Supreme Court issued several instructions to the Center and the states, taking cognizance of the situation of the workers returning on foot during the lockdown. These included things like reaching laborers through road or rail to their state within 15 days, giving them employment in their village. The court also asked the states to report in this regard. The judges recorded in today's order that many states have not yet filed replies. The court has given 10 days to the states for this.
In the second wave of Corona, a fresh petition has been filed against financially troubled laborers through advocate Prashant Bhushan. The next hearing of the case will be held on May 24. The bench of 2 judges has indicated that the situation of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, and Odisha will be discussed in the next hearing. The court has asked these states to respond in detail to the steps taken for the laborers.
