Patrick Raymon McGoldrick, former CEO and Managing Director of Tata Technologies, has sold shares worth approximately ₹164.85 crore through open-market transactions on the BSE. The transaction comes at a time when another Tata Group company, Tata Chemicals, is facing a major dispute with the Kenyan government over its operations in the country.
McGoldrick sold 21 lakh shares, representing around 0.51% of Tata Technologies’ equity, in four tranches at an average price of ₹785 per share. Following the transaction, his stake in Tata Technologies declined from approximately 1.13% to 0.62%.
Former Tata Technologies CEO Sells 21 Lakh Shares
According to the reported transaction details, McGoldrick sold the 21 lakh shares at an average price of ₹785 apiece, taking the total value of the deal to about ₹164.85 crore.
The shares were purchased by four institutional investors: ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, 360 ONE Asset Management and Carnelian Asset Management and Advisors.
Each of the four funds reportedly acquired an equal number of shares at the same price.
Importantly, there is no established evidence that McGoldrick’s share sale is connected to the Kenya dispute involving Tata Chemicals. The two developments involve different Tata Group companies.
Who Is Patrick Raymon McGoldrick?
McGoldrick served as CEO and Managing Director of Tata Technologies before retiring from the leadership role in September 2014 after around two decades with the company.
He subsequently became associated with RNT Associates International, the investment and advisory firm associated with Ratan Tata.
McGoldrick played an important role in the development of Tata Technologies as an engineering and digital-services business. Warren Harris later succeeded him as CEO.
Tata Technologies Shares: What Happened to the Stock?
Tata Technologies made its stock-market debut in November 2023, marking the Tata Group’s first IPO in nearly two decades.
The stock listed at a substantial premium to its issue price, generating strong initial returns for IPO investors. However, after its debut-period gains, the shares subsequently corrected from their listing levels.
At the latest reported close cited in the transaction, Tata Technologies shares stood at around ₹799.85 on the BSE, giving the company a market capitalisation of approximately ₹32,484 crore.
Tata Technologies Reports Profit Growth
The share transaction comes after Tata Technologies reported an improvement in its quarterly profitability.
The company’s consolidated net profit for the March quarter rose around 8% year-on-year to ₹204.17 crore, compared with ₹188.87 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Tata Technologies provides engineering, product-development and digital-services solutions to global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their Tier-1 suppliers.
What Is Happening With Tata Chemicals in Kenya?
Separately, another Tata Group company is facing a significant development in Kenya.
Kenyan President William Ruto has ordered Tata Chemicals to stop operations at its Lake Magadi facility, accusing the company of failing to deliver sufficient economic benefits to the local community and region. Kenya has also indicated that it wants new investors to establish glass and chemical manufacturing facilities locally.
Tata Chemicals, however, has said its Kenyan subsidiary is fully compliant with regulatory requirements and has submitted the information and documentation requested by the Kenyan authorities. The company said it remains committed to resolving the outstanding issues through the appropriate legal and regulatory channels.
Is the Tata Technologies Share Sale Linked to the Kenya Dispute?
There is currently no evidence establishing a direct connection.
McGoldrick’s transaction involves Tata Technologies, a Tata Group company focused on engineering and digital services. The Kenya controversy concerns Tata Chemicals Magadi, which operates a soda-ash facility at Lake Magadi.
Therefore, the two events should be reported separately rather than suggesting that the Kenya dispute triggered McGoldrick’s share sale.
