The family of Gopal Mukherjee alias Gopal Patha, who played an important role in protecting Hindus during the 1946 Calcutta riots, has filed an FIR against the director of the film 'The Bengal Files', Vivek Agnihotri. They allege that an attempt has been made to distort the image of Gopal Patha by presenting wrong facts in this film.

Filing a complaint at the Bahubazar police station in Kolkata, Gopal Patha's grandson, Sanatan Mukherjee, has claimed that permission was not taken from the family before presenting his character on screen. Let us tell you that the film 'The Bengal Files' is based on the tragedy related to the Bengal partition, in which the massacre of Hindus is shown.

What are the allegations in the FIR?

Gopal Patha's grandson, Sanatan Mukherjee, says that his grandfather has been shown as a butcher in the film, which he strongly objects to. My grandfather was a member of the freedom-fighting group Anushilan Samiti. Yes, he had 2 meat shops, but he was a wrestler by profession.

Sanatan Mukherjee said-

In 1946, when the Muslim League instigated riots in Kolkata, my grandfather took up arms to save people from communal violence.

Relief was received from the Kolkata High Court

Let us tell you that the film's director, Vivek Agnihotri, and his wife, Pallavi Joshi, had knocked on the door of the Kolkata High Court on 31 July and demanded the cancellation of 2 old FIRs. The first FIR against them was lodged during the teaser campaign in Murshidabad. At the same time, the second FIR was registered in Kolkata's Lake Town Police.

Hearing the case on August 4, Kolkata High Court judge Jay Sengupta had put an interim stay on the FIR. However, many people allege that Vivek's film is on sensitive issues, which can provoke communal violence in society.
