The economic crisis in Sri Lanka: Police fired at protesters in the Rambukana area, one dead; 12 injured

One person has been killed and 12 injured in police firing in the town of Rambukana, about 100 km from the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Sri Lankan police confirmed the shooting, saying protesters were blocking a railway crossing. The police had to fire them to remove them.

Local police officer Nihal Thalduwa told the media that the police had earlier tried to remove the protesters peacefully. Police say that when the protesters did not move, the police had to open fire.

 

Earlier, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa proposed to amend the country's constitution. According to media reports, Rajapaksa talked about amending the constitution based on the legislature, executive, and judiciary. Every effort will be made to make the government accountable to the people, he said. I hope that the amended constitution will live up to the expectations of the people.

 

On the other hand, the Parliament session has started in Sri Lanka today. Sri Lanka's biggest opposition party Samagi Jana Balvegaya (SJB) may move a no-confidence motion against the government. However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa made a big move yesterday by appointing 17 new ministers.

 

Opposition MP Harsha da Silva on Monday claimed that he has the necessary numbers and will move a no-confidence motion when the time comes. On the other hand, the people of Sri Lanka, stricken by rising inflation, are also continuing to protest. The protesters are adamant about accepting the resignation of the government.
