The Indian Air Force has received 56,960 applications under the Agneepath Recruitment Scheme. The registration process for the scheme began on Friday, a week after violent protests in several states against it. "56960! This is the total number of applications received so far from future Agneepath on the website in response to the Agneepath recruitment application process. Registration will close on July 5," the IAF tweeted on Sunday.

Introducing the Agneepath scheme on June 14, the government had said youth in the age group of 17-and-a-half to 21 years would be recruited for a four-year term, of whom 25 percent would be inducted for regular service later. There were violent protests against the scheme in many parts of the country. Now after receiving so many applications, the question is being raised that what was the effect of its protest.

Announcement of several steps like a preference for Agniveers

The government on June 16 had increased the upper age limit for recruitment under this scheme from 21 to 23 years for the year 2022. Also, later on in his retirement, several steps were announced like a preference for him in central paramilitary forces and public sector defense undertakings.

Priority also is joining state police forces

Several BJP-ruled states also announced that Agnivars would be given priority in joining the state police forces. The armed forces, however, have made it clear that violent protests and arsonists against the new recruitment scheme will not be included in the recruitment process.
