Tribal areas can be kept out of the purview of UCC, Law Commission has received 19 lakh suggestions so far

In some parts of the country, including the northeastern states, tribal groups may be considered for exclusion from the purview of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi put forward this idea in the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice headed by him on Monday. In this meeting, their opinion was taken while discussing the nature of UCC. The meeting was attended by 17 MPs from various parties and members of the Law Commission. A report will be prepared based on everyone's opinion, which will be presented in the Parliament.

Uddhav faction of BSP and Shiv Sena supported UCC

Representatives of the Law Commission said that so far 19 lakh suggestions have been received on UCC. This number is expected to reach around 25 lakh by the last date of July 13. In his suggestion to keep North East and other tribal areas out of the purview of the proposed UCC, Sushil Modi said that there are exceptions in all laws. There are already many laws in the country, in which they have got some concessions.

Many laws are not applicable in the northeastern states without their consent. No member of the Trinamool Congress attended the meeting, while some members of the opposition, including the Congress and the DMK, termed the proposed UCC for electoral gains and said it was not the right time to discuss the contentious issue. BSP and Shiv Sena Uddhav faction supported UCC.

Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) also did not oppose but did not support either. Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut said that this is the law in many countries. It should be considered only after extensive concern and discussion of various communities and regions.

Congress MP Vivek Tankha and DMK MP P Wilson in their written statement questioned the Law Commission's move to invite suggestions on the UCC. He said that the previous commission had not declared UCC as essential.

A new framework of law will be made in the report

The previous commission on UCC had received 75,000 suggestions, based on which a report was also prepared. Various anomalies were mentioned in it, after which it was felt that UCC should be considered in a new way.

Now, based on new suggestions, the Law Commission will prepare its report and recommend it to the government, which will be presented in the Parliament to give shape to the law. Before this, if necessary, more meetings of the parliamentary committee can also be held.

It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing BJP workers in Madhya Pradesh on June 27 had indicated about UCC. He had said that a family does not run by different rules. Similarly, the country cannot run with a dual legal system. Our constitution also guarantees equal rights to all.
