US President Donald Trump has signed a law that gives Tibetans the right to select the next heir of their religious leader, the Dalai Lama, ignoring the ongoing conflict between China and the US and warnings from Beijing. 'The Tibet Policy and Support Act' was passed by the US Congress only last week, which irritated China badly and its Foreign Ministry called this law an attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs.
China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said after the passage of the bill last week, "We urge the US not to interfere in China's internal affairs and refrain from signing these negative laws." Lest it harm bilateral relations in the future.
After reports of a new law being made on Monday, China's Foreign Ministry said that Beijing does not accept this law of the US and the issues related to Tibet are our domestic affairs.
US law calls for the opening of the US Embassy in Tibet's Shahab Lhasa. Along with this, it has also been said that Tibetans have the right to select the successor of the 14th Dalai Lama. At the same time, China, which calls the Dalai Lama a separatist, dangerous, says that it is necessary to get Beijing's approval in the election of the religious leader of Tibet. However, Tibet does not accept this claim from China.
What does the law say?
Under the new law, the US special diplomat has been given the right to select the next Dalai Lama only by the Tibet Buddhist community on matters of Tibet. To ensure this, he can combine internationally.
- It proposes assistance to non-governmental organizations in support of Tibetan communities in Tibet.
There is talk of a ban on new Chinese consulates in the United States until the US Consulate is established in Lhasa, Tibet.
-The law directs the US government to impose economic and visa restrictions on any Chinese official who interferes with the successor of the Dalai Lama.
- This law prohibits China from opening any new commercial embassy in the US until the US gets permission to open its diplomatic office in Tibet.
India gave shelter to the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama has been living in India's refuge since 1959 after fleeing from China after the invasion of Tibet. Along with him, thousands of his followers also live in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Currently, around 80 thousand Tibetans are living in India. Besides, more than one and a half million Tibetans have taken refuge around the world, especially in the US and Europe.
