Two killed in heavy rain in Chennai: Record rain recorded in a single day after 30 years; Schools closed in 7 districts

Record rains lashed Chennai and its adjoining areas on Tuesday, leading to a flood-like situation in many areas of the city. Two people died in rain-related accidents. In North Chennai, a man died of electrocution, while a woman lost her life after being buried under a building. The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday morning announced that schools and colleges will remain closed in 7 districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet districts.

 

Chennai rain breaks 30-year record

For the first time in the last 30 years, Chennai received so much rain on November 1. At the same time, this is the third-highest rainfall in the last 72 years. According to the Regional Meteorological Department, 8 cm (80 mm) of rain has fallen in Chennai within 24 hours till 8:30 am on Tuesday. According to the Meteorological Department, Chennai received 13 cm of rain on 1 November 1990. Before that in 1964, 11 cm of rain had fallen on the same date.

 

Northeast rains in the state since October 19

The Northeast Monsoon reached the Tamil Nadu coast on 19 October and spread over the entire state by 30 October. Chennai Meteorological Department chief S Balachander said that it is raining between 1 cm to 9 cm in Tamil Nadu these days. It also includes the Cauvery river delta and coastal areas.

 

There will be more rain in the city for two days. Heavy rain is expected in the next 24 hours. Balachander said that we are currently seeing active monsoons. A lot of changes are going to happen this season.
