Ukraine crisis: what Biden said in parliament today, how big a challenge for Putin?

US President Joe Biden spoke only about Russia's attack on Ukraine in the opening 15 minutes of his State of the Union speech in Parliament on Tuesday night.

It is this incident that has changed the world as compared to their domestic legal agenda.

Although President Biden's annual speech was in the form of a message to parliament, his comments on Ukraine were for four different audiences, with four different messages.

Let's see to whom and what he was trying to tell.

for the people of Ukraine

At the start of the speech, Biden called out to the Ukrainian ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, who was sitting on the balcony with his wife Jill Biden and other guests.

Biden said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you." On this the MPs applauded.

The US has already sent military, economic, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. On Tuesday night, Biden wanted to send a message that the United States cares for Ukraine's future and stands with the beleaguered nation.

"Every Ukrainian from President Zelensky is inspiring the world with his fearlessness, courage, and determination," he said.

Although Kyiv is surrounded by Russian tanks, his message was that most American help is on the way.

for the leader of Russia

Biden's message to Vladimir Putin was very simple. He said the Russian president had made a "grossly miscalculation" and that the economic pain the US and Europe inflicted on Russia for the attack was only the beginning.

The Russian currency ruble and the Russian stock market are constantly collapsing. The assets of oligarchs (members or supporters of Russia's oligarchy) will be confiscated and Russia is losing key technology.

Apart from the economic pain, there was also a second message for Russia. Biden stressed that the US and its allies would fight to protect "an inch of the territory of NATO countries".

Putin has put his nuclear forces on alert and has warned of disastrous consequences if any nation intervenes in Ukraine.

Biden's message was to clear doubts about when and where America itself would fight.

to Europe

The United States and its allies have taken remarkable steps in imposing sanctions on Russia and providing military aid to Ukraine. During the speech, Biden expressed happiness over this fact several times.

"They thought the West and Nato would not react. Putin was wrong. We were ready," the president said.

America's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan may have influenced Putin that Biden would not consult allies this time around.

Biden was criticized for not discussing the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan with allies. But the US President ignored this issue during his speech.

Biden particularly emphasized the key role Europe has played in responding to Russia's attack, which may be part of his administration's continued effort to mend ties.

During his presidency, Biden has repeatedly defined this period as a global struggle between democracy and dictatorship.

He believes that maintaining this will require cooperation among the democracies of the world. It was a subject that he touched upon again on Tuesday.

"Democracy is emerging at the moment and the world is taking the side of peace and security," he said.

for the American people

An opinion poll published Tuesday showed a majority of the US population is interested in hearing Biden on the Ukraine conflict.

Biden's message was a response to global unity, ranging from Asia to Latin America and Europe to Switzerland. It was a testament to the efforts of his tenure.

"America's diplomacy matters, America resolves issues," he said.

Biden promised during the election campaign that he would restore America's position in the world and improve relations with allies that have deteriorated during the Trump tenure. To this, he indicated that his efforts have yielded concrete results while a lot is at stake.

Biden also sent a message to Americans that the Ukrainian conflict posed a threat to American troops and that they were concerned.

He said that as a NATO ally, America must support him. However, he also made it clear that the US military did not and will not fight with the Russian army in Ukraine.

Ultimately, President Biden spoke on the issue that most Americans were interested in hearing about the economic burden the Ukraine conflict would put on them.

After the economic problems caused by the Covid-19 epidemic, another crisis has posed a challenge to the President. His image has already been weakened in the American public.

He said that the US will create sanctions to target Russia's economy, but its impact on the world cannot be stopped. He has announced that the US will withdraw 30 million barrels of crude oil from its strategic reserves, but the move is more symbolic than the prospect of reducing the rising gas price for American consumers.
