Virat Kohli Record: 9 Sixes, Fastest 15,000 ODI Runs and 42nd Century in India

Virat Kohli produced a record-breaking performance in Thiruvananthapuram as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the opening ODI. Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, smashing nine sixes and completing several major milestones during India's successful chase.

Kohli's innings included his 55th ODI century, his first ODI innings with nine sixes, and the landmark of 15,000 ODI runs. He also equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most international centuries scored in a single country, reaching his 42nd international century in India.

Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest to 15,000 ODI Runs

Kohli became the fastest batter to score 15,000 runs in men's ODIs, reaching the milestone in his 303rd innings.

He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's previous mark of 377 innings. Kohli is now only the second player in ODI history to cross 15,000 runs, behind Tendulkar.

The milestone came during India's chase of West Indies' 295/7. Kohli reached the mark with a boundary off Alzarri Joseph before continuing his assault on the West Indies attack.

Kohli Smashes Record Nine Sixes

Kohli's 139* was also notable for his aggressive strokeplay.

The former India captain hit nine sixes, his highest number in a single ODI innings. His previous best was eight sixes against Sri Lanka in 2023.

Kohli also struck 10 fours and finished the innings with a strike rate above 157, helping India complete the chase in just 41.4 overs.

Kohli Equals Tendulkar's Record of 42 International Centuries in India

Kohli's century was his 42nd international hundred on Indian soil.

That takes him level with Tendulkar for the most international centuries scored in a single country. The milestone adds another link between the two Indian batting greats, with Kohli continuing to break or equal several of Tendulkar's long-standing records.

Kohli Equals Tendulkar's List-A Century Record

Kohli also registered his 60th List-A century, bringing him level with Tendulkar for the most centuries in List-A cricket.

List-A cricket includes international ODIs as well as recognised domestic one-day matches. Kohli reached the milestone in his 338th List-A innings, according to the statistical records reported after the match.

Kohli Records 10th ODI Century Against West Indies

The 139* was also Kohli's 10th ODI century against the West Indies.

That equals his own record for the most ODI hundreds against a single opponent, with Kohli having previously scored 10 ODI centuries against Sri Lanka.

Kohli's 112th Successful ODI Run-Chase

Kohli was also part of India's successful ODI run chase for the 112th time, continuing his remarkable record in matches where India has chased down a target.

Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni remain ahead of him in the number of successful ODI run-chases in which they were part of the winning team.

Justin Greaves Scores Maiden ODI Century

West Indies opener Justin Greaves also reached a significant milestone in Thiruvananthapuram.

Greaves scored 101 runs, his maiden ODI century, as West Indies posted 295/7 in their 50 overs. John Campbell added 62, while Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 58.

Greaves' century came at the age of 32, adding another notable entry to the West Indies' ODI records.

India Beat West Indies by Eight Wickets

West Indies scored 295/7 after Greaves' century and Campbell's 62.

India's chase was then dominated by Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. Gill scored 110, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 as India reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Kuldeep Yadav was named Player of the Match after taking 4/40 during the West Indies innings.
