Most of China has been hit by unusually high temperatures and drought, affecting crops and drinking water supplies. China has received very little rain, especially in the southwestern mega-city Chongqing, which covers a large area of mountains and rivers.
China's local media reported on Tuesday that water has been sent in firefighting trucks to supply drinking water to outlying villages and to irrigate crops, according to the AP news agency. The rainfall in Chongqing this year has been less than half that of the previous year, causing small waterways to dry up. Officials have issued a warning saying that the temperature can go above 40 degrees. This year the heat has broken records in most parts of China.
Flood outbreak amid drought
Amid the drought, some regions of China have also been hit by flash floods, underscoring the effects of climate change on the vast nation of 1.4 billion people stretching from the mountains and deserts of Central Asia to the South China Sea.
The drought in Changqing has affected more than 600,000 people and 36,700 hectares (90,690 acres) of agriculture, Xinhua news agency reported. According to the agency, the neighboring Hubei province of Changqing has also been badly affected. Some regions have reported a complete failure of the growing season.
