Water Crisis in Delhi: The issue of providing additional water to Delhi is not being resolved, the concerned states will meet again today

The issue of providing additional water to Delhi does not seem to be resolved. After the Supreme Court's order, the Upper Yamuna River Board meeting on Friday also failed to resolve the issue. Delhi government ministers and officials are trying to increase the availability of water by talking to Himachal and Haryana, but have not yet achieved any success. A meeting in this regard is also scheduled to be held in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

The Delhi government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court to resolve the water crisis in Delhi. The Delhi government had alleged that its share of water was not being given by Haryana. It was also alleged that Himachal Pradesh is ready to give 137 cusecs of water as per the agreement, but the Haryana government is creating obstacles in it.

Haryana refused to receive water

The Supreme Court had directed Haryana to give additional water and Haryana to deliver it to Delhi. Himachal had claimed in the court that it was giving additional water, but it was not reaching Delhi. At the same time, Haryana has refused to receive additional water from Himachal Pradesh.

The court had assigned the responsibility of investigating the different claims of the states to the Upper Yamuna River Board. The board had told in its report to the court last week that Himachal Pradesh has claimed to give additional water to Delhi but it has no means to prove it. There is neither a reservoir from where additional water has been released nor is there any data to prove it.

The board admitted - Haryana is giving more water to Delhi

The board had also said that Haryana's claim that it is giving more water to Delhi than the 1994 agreement was correct. Last Thursday, the matter was heard again in the Supreme Court in which Delhi was directed to go to the Upper Yamuna River Board. On the court's direction, the board also met on Friday but no decision could be taken on resolving Delhi's water crisis. Delhi's Water Minister Atishi said that the board has emphasized on the states finding a solution through mutual dialogue.

She says that she has spoken to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and he has assured to help in resolving the water crisis. Till a solution is found, the Haryana government should give additional water to Delhi on humanitarian grounds.

Information is not available due to the absence of a flowmeter

He said that water is released for Delhi from Hathini Kund Barrage. There is no flowmeter installed there, due to which it is not known how much water has been released for Delhi. There is a flowmeter installed in Bawana, Delhi, which shows that less water is coming from Haryana. Therefore, Haryana's claim of giving more water to Delhi than the agreement is wrong.

Haryana is using the extra water received from Himachal for itself. He said that people from all the states come to Delhi in search of employment. Due to this, the population here has increased a lot as compared to the year 1994. Therefore, it is not fair to give water to Delhi as per the agreement of that time. It needs to be increased.
