Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a major privacy-focused feature that could completely change the way users connect on the app. According to reports, WhatsApp is currently testing a new “Username” feature that will allow users to chat with others without revealing their personal mobile numbers.
The feature is presently being tested among select Android and iOS users and is expected to roll out globally in the coming months. Once launched, users will be able to communicate using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, similar to platforms like Telegram and Instagram.
How Will WhatsApp’s Username Feature Work?
Under the new system, users will be able to create a unique username directly from the WhatsApp Settings menu. After setting it up, they can simply share their username with others to start conversations.
The biggest advantage of this feature is enhanced privacy. If someone contacts you using your username, they will only see your username in the chat interface — your mobile number will remain hidden.
This update is expected to be particularly useful for users participating in public groups, business communities, or conversations with strangers.
Phone Numbers Will Still Be Linked
Although WhatsApp is introducing usernames, the platform is not removing phone numbers entirely. The company has clarified that phone numbers will continue to remain linked to accounts for essential functions such as:
Account login
OTP verification
Account recovery
Security authentication
In simple terms, usernames will act as an additional privacy layer while the phone number continues to operate in the background.
Key Benefits of WhatsApp Username Feature
The upcoming feature brings several important privacy and usability advantages for users:
Phone Number Privacy
Users in group chats or direct conversations will no longer be able to view your personal number if you communicate through usernames.
Flexible Username Changes
WhatsApp will reportedly allow users to change their usernames whenever they want without affecting existing chats, media, or account data.
Better Protection Against Spam
Since users won’t need to share their numbers publicly, it could significantly reduce spam calls and unwanted messages.
Completely Optional Feature
WhatsApp has made this feature optional. Users who prefer the traditional phone-number-based system can continue using the app as before.
Rules for Creating a WhatsApp Username
Reports suggest WhatsApp has already defined several rules for creating usernames:
Username length must be between 3 and 35 characters
At least one letter is mandatory
Only letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_) are allowed
Usernames must be unique
The app will automatically check username availability before saving it.
How to Set Up Your WhatsApp Username
Once the feature becomes available on your device, follow these steps:
Open WhatsApp on your smartphone
On Android, tap the three-dot menu and open “Settings”
On iPhone, tap the “Settings” tab at the bottom
Open your profile section by tapping your name or profile picture
Look for the new “Username” option
Enter your preferred username
If available, save it
After setup, you can start sharing your username instead of your mobile number.
Why This Feature Matters
As concerns around online privacy continue to grow globally, WhatsApp’s new username system could become one of the platform’s biggest privacy upgrades in recent years. The feature may especially benefit creators, businesses, freelancers, and users who frequently interact with unknown contacts online.
With competitors like Telegram and Signal already offering username-based communication, WhatsApp’s move appears aimed at strengthening user privacy while modernizing the platform’s messaging experience.
