Discussions are in full swing regarding who will become the new mayor of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has left for Davos to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF), which has temporarily halted the talks regarding the mayoral post. Following the grand victory of the Mahayuti alliance, the suspense surrounding the mayor's position is growing.
According to the Times of India, a lottery to determine the category of the mayoral post is scheduled for January 22nd. The election dates will be announced only after this decision, and the process could extend until the end of January.
A lottery to determine the category of the mayoral post.
According to the report, a lottery will be held on January 22nd. This will determine whether the mayor's post will be in the open category or reserved for SC/ST, OBC, or women. An official notification will be issued on the same day or the following day, January 23rd, after the lottery results are announced. A seven-day notice is mandatory after this, so the mayoral election could be held on January 29-30 or 30-31.
Currently, Chief Minister Fadnavis is busy in Davos, so the discussions between the BJP and the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena within the alliance regarding the mayoral post have been stalled. Fadnavis left for Davos on Sunday and will return on January 24th. A final decision on this issue is expected only after his return.
