After the Supreme Court in the US overturned its 49-year-old decision that legalized abortion, the demand for birth control pills in the country has seen a huge increase. Because of this, Amazon and some other companies supplying medicines online have limited the order of emergency contraceptive pills. Representatives of the companies have confirmed this in a conversation with the TV channel CNN.
The Amazon company has imposed a limit on the supply of three tablets per week to a customer. These pills also include an emergency pill called Plan B. On the other hand, a company named Rite Aid has also said that it is also limiting the supply of these pills. Rite Aid senior manager Elijah Wojcick told CNN: “Due to the increase in demand, we have put limits on the supply of Plan B contraceptive pills. We will supply only three tablets per week to a customer.
Limit of giving three pills to a customer
The company, CVS Pharmacy, said on Monday that although it has sufficient stock of Plan B and After tablets, it has capped the supply of three tablets per week to a customer. These are both emergency pills. The company said that the purpose of limiting the supply is to ensure the availability of these tablets equitably and consistently to all customers. But on Tuesday it was reported that CVS has removed the cap on sales.
Matt Blanche, Retail Communications Manager at CVS Pharmacy, wrote in an e-mail to CNN: "Shortly after the Supreme Court's decision, there was a boom in sales of emergency contraceptive pills. Then we put limits on sales to ensure equal supply to everyone. But since then the demand has stabilized. So we are in the process of removing the sales cap. That would mean that the tablets would be supplied as per the demand from CVS shops or its website.
People ordered more contraceptive pills in panic
Experts say that there is an ample supply of emergency contraceptive pills on the market. After the Supreme Court's decision, people started ordering more for them in panic, which created a problem. Emergency pills are pills that are taken to get rid of the possibility of pregnancy after having physical without using contraception. Generally, women take these pills when they forget to take birth control pills or the condom gets damaged during physical.
Gynecologists say that taking the emergency pill does not cause abortion. Rather, the chances of pregnancy are lost. Therefore the laws made against abortion in the states should not apply to the consumption of these pills. According to experts, if a woman has already conceived, then emergency pills do not affect her.
