The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved 8 kg migrant laborers to be given 5 kg of grain free of cost every month for 2 months from the central grain reserves. The government announced this last week as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore 'self-reliant India' package in view of the economic crisis arising out of Corona. Under this, migrant workers will be given 5 kg of food grains per person per month free for May and June.

A government release said that this allocation will help reduce the difficulties of migrants and stranded migrants affected by the economic turmoil caused by Corona. The government will bear a food subsidy of Rs 2,982.27 crore from this scheme. Apart from this, the Central Government will bear the expenditure of about 127.25 crores for inter-state transport, maintenance of food grains, dealer margin / additional dealer margin.
