A New Headache for Arvind Kejriwal: An 'Army' of Party Workers Stands with the 7 MPs Who Have Bid Farewell to the Party.

With the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) ranks fragmenting on one side and morale on the verge of collapse on the other, the party now faces the formidable challenge of maintaining unity. Following the defection of seven of the party’s Rajya Sabha members, a palpable sense of despondency has settled among the party cadres.

This marks the second instance within a span of just 14 months where a situation has arisen that threatens to shatter the morale of AAP workers. Following the defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections in February 2025, a wave of gloom was observed not only among AAP’s grassroots workers—particularly those in Delhi—but also among the party’s leadership.

Just as the workers were beginning to recover from that setback, the recent defection of seven Rajya Sabha members has once again exacerbated the sense of despair within the ranks.

Workers May Defect in Large Numbers

It is even being speculated that a significant number of grassroots workers may follow in the footsteps of their favored Rajya Sabha members who have quit the party and defect to other camps. Given this scenario, AAP faces the dual challenge of not only boosting worker morale but also successfully preserving the party’s internal cohesion.

For AAP, the current political developments amount to nothing short of a major crisis. While the party was still attempting to heal the wounds inflicted by its defeat in the February 2025 Assembly elections, the subsequent defection of seven Rajya Sabha MPs has now shaken the very foundations of the organization.

A Fracturing Family and Crushed Morale… How Will the Spirit Be Revived?

The most pressing question currently echoing through the political corridors of the capital is this: will the leadership be able to reignite the spark of enthusiasm among its fracturing ranks and demoralized workers? Reports emerging from within the party suggest that the departure of the seven Rajya Sabha members represents more than just the “exit of leaders”; it signifies a shattering of the trust that the grassroots workers had come to revere as their guiding ideal.

According to sources, active workers across various wards and Assembly constituencies in Delhi are now in a state of deep uncertainty. There is a looming risk that a large number of local workers and office-bearers may follow the lead of their preferred MPs and switch their allegiance to other political parties.

Questions Raised Over AAP’s Top Leadership Strategy

This move by the MPs has not only exposed the party’s internal cohesion but has also cast doubts on the strategy of its top leadership. A prevailing sentiment among party workers is: if even the representatives in the Upper House did not feel secure, what then becomes of the future of the ordinary workers? This situation could inflict severe damage upon the party’s carefully cultivated image of ‘discipline and solidarity.’

A Dual Challenge for AAP

Political analysts believe that AAP now faces a dual challenge. The first is to immediately stem the exodus currently underway within the party, and the second is to restore the morale of its dispirited workers. If the leadership fails to initiate a concrete dialogue program or implement significant organizational changes soon, the party’s structural integrity could weaken even further in the days to come.

Currently, AAP stands at a crossroads where it must embark on a renewed struggle to safeguard both its ideology and its organizational framework. The very workers who once proudly held the party flag high on the streets of Delhi now find themselves disheartened. The days ahead will determine the extent to which Kejriwal and his team succeed in navigating their way out of this existential crisis.
