Apple is set to unveil its latest iPhone lineup at its annual September event today, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company's first foldable iPhone expected to take center stage.
The event, titled “Surprise and shine,” is scheduled for September 9 at 10:30 PM IST in India. Apple has confirmed the event, while the new iPhone models and their specifications have been widely reported ahead of the launch.
Among the most anticipated upgrades is the camera. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to introduce a variable-aperture main camera, a technology that gives photographers greater control over how much light reaches the camera sensor.
Why are iPhone cameras considered so good?
A smartphone camera's image quality is not determined by megapixel count alone. Several components work together, including the lens, aperture, image sensor, image-processing hardware and computational photography software.
The three key elements of a smartphone camera
Lens: The lens gathers incoming light and focuses it onto the image sensor. Optical quality, coatings and lens design can have a major impact on sharpness, contrast and flare.
Image sensor: The sensor contains photosites that respond to incoming light and convert it into electrical signals. Sensor size and technology can influence dynamic range, noise and low-light performance.
Image processing: The phone's image signal processor and computational photography algorithms turn sensor data into the final photograph. This processing can improve exposure, color, detail, noise reduction and dynamic range.
Modern smartphone photography therefore depends on the entire imaging system rather than a single specification.
What is variable aperture?
Aperture controls the amount of light entering a camera. A larger aperture allows more light to reach the sensor, which can be useful in low-light conditions. A smaller aperture restricts the amount of light and can provide greater control in bright conditions.
A variable-aperture camera can change this opening instead of relying on a fixed aperture.
This is one reason the technology is often compared with cameras used in traditional interchangeable-lens photography. On a smartphone, however, its implementation is designed specifically for the constraints of a compact camera system.
According to current reports, Apple's iPhone 18 Pro camera system could use a variable aperture to provide greater control over exposure and background blur. There is still uncertainty over whether the feature will be offered on both Pro models or reserved for the Pro Max.
Does a higher megapixel count mean a better camera?
Not necessarily.
Megapixels determine how much image data a sensor can capture at its native resolution, but they do not by themselves determine overall image quality.
A camera with more megapixels can potentially capture additional fine detail. However, factors such as sensor size, lens quality, aperture, autofocus, stabilization, dynamic range and image processing also play important roles.
This is why a smartphone with a lower-resolution camera can sometimes produce a more pleasing photograph than a phone advertising a much higher megapixel count.
Why does sensor size matter?
A larger image sensor can collect more light, all else being equal. This can help a camera produce cleaner images in difficult lighting conditions and improve dynamic range.
However, sensor size should not be considered in isolation. Pixel architecture, lens design, aperture and computational photography also affect the final result.
This combination is particularly important for smartphone photography because phones have much smaller camera modules than dedicated cameras.
iPhone vs Android cameras: What's the difference?
It is difficult to make a blanket comparison between iPhone and Android cameras because Android includes devices ranging from inexpensive phones to highly advanced flagship models.
Premium Android smartphones can feature large sensors, sophisticated computational photography, optical stabilization, high-resolution cameras and advanced video capabilities.
Apple's advantage has traditionally come from the integration of hardware and software. The company controls the processor, operating system and camera software, allowing it to tightly integrate image capture with computational photography.
Apple has also invested heavily in video recording, stabilization and color consistency across its camera system.
Why megapixels aren't everything
The simplest way to understand smartphone camera quality is to think of it as a chain:
Light → Lens → Aperture → Sensor → Image Processor → Computational Photography → Final Image
If one component is weak, a high megapixel number cannot necessarily compensate for it.
This is why camera comparisons should look beyond specifications such as 50MP, 108MP or 200MP and examine the entire imaging system.
What could the iPhone 18 Pro camera bring?
The biggest reported change is the move toward a variable-aperture main camera. Apple is also expected to improve other aspects of the camera system and image processing.
If the variable-aperture technology performs as expected, it could give iPhone users greater control over exposure and potentially improve low-light photography and depth effects.
The feature could also become one of the most important camera upgrades in the iPhone 18 Pro generation—not because it increases the megapixel count, but because it changes how the camera controls light before the image is captured.
