The latest move comes amid continued volatility in the precious-metals market, with investors closely tracking global economic conditions, central-bank buying and expectations surrounding interest rates.

Gold is ₹20,000 higher than December 2025 level

Gold has recorded a substantial increase since the beginning of 2026.

On December 31, 2025, the price of 10 grams of gold was around ₹1.33 lakh. At the latest IBJA rate, it stands at approximately ₹1.53 lakh, representing an increase of about ₹20,000.

Silver, meanwhile, has also remained highly volatile. It was priced at approximately ₹2.30 lakh per kilogram at the end of 2025 and is currently around ₹2.36 lakh.

However, both metals have witnessed much sharper swings during the year.

Gold touched an all-time high of around ₹1.76 lakh per 10 grams, while silver climbed to approximately ₹3.86 lakh per kg on January 29, according to the figures cited in the report.

Can gold reach ₹1.70 lakh by December?

The outlook for gold remains positive, although future prices will depend on several domestic and international factors.

Anindya Banerjee, Senior Vice President and Head of Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, said gold continues to receive support from retail investors as well as global central banks.

Central-bank purchases, including those by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), remain an important factor supporting demand for gold.

Based on the current outlook cited in the report, gold could potentially rise to around ₹1.70 lakh per 10 grams by December, while silver could move toward ₹3 lakh per kg.

These are market projections rather than guaranteed price levels, and actual prices could change depending on global economic conditions, interest rates, currency movements, geopolitical developments and investor demand.

Why are gold and silver prices rising?

Gold is traditionally viewed as a safe-haven asset during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. Demand can also increase when investors expect interest rates to decline because lower rates can make non-yielding assets such as gold relatively more attractive.

Silver has additional demand drivers because it is both a precious metal and an industrial commodity.

Consequently, movements in investment demand, industrial consumption, global economic growth and supply conditions can all influence silver prices.

3 things to check before buying gold jewellery

With gold prices remaining elevated, buyers should pay close attention to purity, pricing and additional charges before purchasing jewellery.

1. Buy BIS-hallmarked gold

Consumers should look for BIS hallmarking when buying gold jewellery. Hallmarking provides information about the purity of the gold.

Buyers should check the hallmark details and ensure that the jewellery corresponds to the purity they are paying for.

2. Cross-check the gold price

Before making a purchase, check the prevailing gold rate and compare it with the price quoted by the jeweller.

Remember that gold prices differ according to purity, including 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold.

The final jewellery bill can also include taxes and other applicable charges, so buyers should ask for a complete price breakdown.

3. Understand making charges

Making charges are added by jewellers for manufacturing the jewellery. These charges can vary significantly depending on the design, workmanship and jeweller.

Consumers should therefore ask for the making-charge component separately rather than considering only the quoted gold rate.

For larger purchases, buyers can also ask whether the jeweller offers any reduction in making charges.

Gold and silver prices remain in focus

Gold and silver have experienced significant price swings in 2026, and the latest increase has once again put precious metals in focus.

Gold is currently around ₹1.53 lakh per 10 grams, while silver stands near ₹2.36 lakh per kilogram based on the latest figures cited from IBJA.

With central-bank demand, investment flows and global economic conditions continuing to influence the market, investors and jewellery buyers will be watching closely to see whether the metals can sustain their upward momentum through the remainder of 2026.
