Akshay has been granted a Certificate of Registration by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the Government of India. According to the document, the actor has been granted Indian citizenship under Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

 

What is Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, of 1955?

Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, of 1955 refers to the citizenship of persons who have been registered as Overseas Citizens of India for five years. Also, the person must have resided in India for one year immediately before applying for Indian citizenship and must have resided in India for at least six years during the eight years immediately preceding this period of one year.

 

Which documents are needed?

Overseas Indians have to upload some important documents to get citizenship. These papers are a copy of the valid foreign passport and a copy of the certificate of registration as an overseas citizen of India under section 7A.

Bypassing the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the year 2003, the Parliament of the country made a provision to provide citizenship of India to the people of Indian origin who settled abroad. It has been named Overseas Citizenship of India. According to this, any person of Indian origin who has been a citizen of India or any territory thereof after the commencement of the Constitution and who has acquired citizenship of a country other than Pakistan and Bangladesh can register under the Citizenship Act, of 1955. After registration, if a person stays in India for one year out of five years, then he can get citizenship in India. Currently, dual citizenship can be granted to people of Indian origin settled in 16 countries including America, Britain, Canada, France, and Australia. Because citizens of these countries can take dual citizenship.

 

Why did Akshay take Canadian citizenship?

In the year 2019, Akshay Kumar finally started the process of canceling his Canadian passport and getting his Indian passport back. During an interview in February this year, while talking about his citizenship, Akshay said that India is everything to him. Whatever I have achieved, I have done so. I am fortunate that I got a chance to do something for the country. Akshay told during this time that more than 15 of his films had flopped at one point in time, and this was the reason that inspired him to take Canadian citizenship.

 

He said, 'I thought that my films are not working and I have to do one thing. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said to come here. After which I applied and got citizenship. I just had two films left to release. Luckily both became superhit. My friend said to go back and start working again. After that, I started getting work. I forgot I have a Canadian passport. The thought of getting this passport replaced never came, but now I have applied to get my passport replaced.
