Amnesty International report: Hanging cases increased by 20% in two years, and Iran has the highest death sentence with 314 people

In the last two years, there has been a 20% increase in the cases of execution of criminals worldwide. Whereas, the number of criminals who have been sentenced to death has increased by 39%. In the year 2020, 483 criminals were hanged in the world and 1,477 were sentenced to death. In the next year 2021, 579 criminals were hanged worldwide and 2,052 criminals were sentenced to death.

This shocking information has come to the fore in the latest 66-page report by Amnesty International. This organization collects data related to human rights abuses around the world.

80% of executions in the world were done in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia

Iran tops the death penalty countries. In the year 2021, 314 people were given the death penalty, while in 2020, 246 people were given the death penalty. The report said that these figures do not include data from China, North Korea, and Vietnam, because these countries do not provide data related to executions and death sentences of criminals.

However, Amnesty International believes that China is at the forefront of the death penalty in the world. At the same time, 80% of the total executions given in 2021 last year have been given in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

No reduction in hanging cases even in 2022, Amnesty condemns

Countries like Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia have not seen any reduction in executions even in the early months of 2022. Amnesty International's Secretary General Agnes Callamard says the organization condemns the death penalty in all cases. These are human rights abuses primarily affecting minorities and marginalized communities.
