For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is providing its own Chief Minister in Bihar. Samrat Choudhary—the son of former minister Shakuni Choudhary, who joined the BJP in 2017 after transitioning from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) through the Janata Dal (United)—has been elected as the 24th Chief Minister of Bihar. Samrat’s name was unanimously endorsed first during the BJP legislative party meeting, and subsequently during the NDA legislative party meeting. Former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar symbolically handed over his legacy to him by garlanding him with a makhana (fox nut) garland. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place today at 10:50 AM at the Lok Bhawan. The Governor will administer the oath of office to Samrat Choudhary along with two Deputy Chief Ministers. Today, only three individuals—including Samrat Choudhary—will take the oath; the remaining ministers will be sworn in at a later date. The swearing-in ceremony will be attended by Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Shivraj Singh, senior leaders of the Bihar BJP, and all senior leaders from the NDA alliance.
Two Deputy CMs from the JD(U) Quota
In 2020, when the NDA government was formed under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, the BJP provided two Deputy Chief Ministers; Renu Devi and Tarkishore Prasad were given this opportunity. Subsequently, the NDA government underwent two more swearing-in ceremonies. On both these occasions, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha were appointed as Deputy Chief Ministers. Now, as the BJP assumes the role of the “elder brother” within the alliance, there will be two Deputy Chief Ministers from the JD(U) quota. Earlier, there was speculation that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, would become a Deputy Chief Minister; however, he declined the offer. Consequently, the JD(U) decided to appoint Vijay Choudhary—who hails from the Bhumihar community—and Bijendra Yadav—who hails from the Yadav community—as Deputy Chief Ministers. Both are counted among Nitish Kumar’s most trusted leaders.
Now, What Did Samrat Choudhary Say?
After being unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Bihar, Samrat Choudhary stated, “Throughout my life, the BJP has provided me with numerous opportunities to serve. I have been working as a political activist for nearly 30 years; however, initially, I lacked a specific ideological affiliation. I have been working for the BJP since 2015. Since then, I have discharged every responsibility entrusted to me by the party with utmost dedication. The party has given me the opportunity to serve in various capacities, and it has placed its trust in me.” When the NDA government was formed in Bihar, I had the privilege of becoming the Deputy Chief Minister. In 2025, when the NDA government was re-elected, I received the opportunity to serve as both the Minister of the Home Department and the Deputy Chief Minister. Today, I have once again been entrusted with a significant responsibility, and I will make every effort to discharge it to the best of my ability. I assure the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Party’s National President, General Secretary (Organization) B.L. Santhosh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and State President Sanjay Saraogi that we will continue to uphold the BJP’s ideology—which places the nation above all else and is committed to making it the very best—and that we will prioritize the party. Nitish Kumar has taught me a great deal—specifically, how a government is run, how good governance is established in Bihar, and what truly serves the best interests of democracy. By aligning Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) with Nitish Kumar’s resolve for a prosperous Bihar, we will make Bihar prosperous and contribute our share toward the development of the nation.
