On Sunday, the batsmen of the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), launched a fierce assault on the Mumbai Indians bowlers at the Wankhede Stadium. First, Phil Salt (78) and Virat Kohli (50) set the stage; then, following Salt’s dismissal, Captain Rajat Patidar (53) unleashed a blistering batting display, leaving no stone unturned in humiliating Mumbai on their home turf.
For the second consecutive match, Mumbai’s bowling attack—stacked with stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult—appeared remarkably ordinary. Patidar reached his half-century in just 17 balls, marking the joint-second fastest fifty in RCB’s history. Powered by this explosive performance from the top order, RCB posted a mammoth total of 240 runs for the loss of four wickets; in response, the Mumbai Indians could only manage 222 runs for the loss of five wickets, handing RCB an 18-run victory.
What is the status of the IPL 2026 Points Table?
This marks RCB’s third victory of the season, while it is the Mumbai Indians’ third consecutive defeat. Furthermore, this represents RCB’s sixth win against the Mumbai Indians in their last eight encounters. Following the defeat, Mumbai Captain Hardik Pandya admitted that their strategies were currently not working at all and that they now required significant changes. Capitalizing on Mumbai’s decision to bowl first, Salt and Kohli provided a sensational start for RCB by forging a 120-run partnership for the opening wicket.
Kohli signaled his aggressive intent early on by smashing a magnificent six off Trent Boult. Meanwhile, Salt took on both Boult and Hardik, playing a series of big shots. He further ramped up the pressure on the bowlers by hitting three consecutive sixes in a single over from Santner. By the end of the Powerplay, Bangalore had already amassed 71 runs. Mumbai was compelled to bring Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack earlier than planned, but by then, RCB had already established a commanding lead.
In the eighth over, Salt struck three consecutive fours off Mayank Markande, while Kohli also targeted Santner. Eventually, Shardul dismissed Salt, breaking the partnership. Patidar then took the crease and smashed three sixes in a single over off Markande. His innings completely turned the tide of the match in RCB’s favor. Kohli completed his half-century in 37 balls but was dismissed in the 15th over. Ultimately, Santner sent Patidar back to the pavilion, but by then, he had already scored 53 runs off just 20 balls. Tim David played a cameo of 34 runs off 16 balls.
Rohit Retires Hurt
Mumbai, too, got off to a blistering start. Riyan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma put up 57 runs in five overs; however, in the sixth over, Rohit had to retire hurt due to a hamstring strain. At the time of his retirement, Rohit was batting on 19. Rickelton took a single off Rasikh Dar’s first delivery. Rohit faced the next ball, and it was during this moment that he decided to leave the field due to the strain. This proved to be the turning point of the match.
Subsequently, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals. Although Sherfane Rutherford played an unbeaten innings of 71 runs off 31 balls—aided by nine sixes—and propelled the team’s score past the 200-run mark, it proved insufficient to secure a victory for the team. This was a rare match in which both Rohit and Virat appeared either injured or unwell; Virat did not take the field to bowl or field during the second innings. During the commentary, Ravi Shastri was heard mentioning that Virat was suffering from a fever.
The Difference in Bowling
On one hand, Mumbai’s bowling performance appeared Bumrah failed to take a wicket for the fourth consecutive match, while the other bowlers conceded runs heavily. In contrast—despite bowling with the dew factor in play—Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar, and Rasikh Dar delivered disciplined bowling spells. Suyash proved to be slightly expensive, but he managed to claim two crucial wickets: those of Tilak Varma and Rickelton.
