AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). In the petition, Owaisi has demanded a ban on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Indian Union Muslim League has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against CAA. Recently, the government has issued a notification and implemented CAA across the country.
More than 200 petitions have been filed in the apex court against CAA
In his petition filed in the Supreme Court, Asaduddin Owaisi demanded that under the CAA law, the government should not provide citizenship to anyone under Section 6B of the Citizenship Amendment Act. In the petitions filed against CAA, the CAA law has been described as against the Constitution and discriminatory. More than 200 petitions have been filed in the apex court against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. The CAA law was approved by the Parliament only in the year 2019 and since then this law has been opposed.
Why is CAA being opposed?
Under the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, the government has a provision to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India before December 31, 2014, after being victims of religious persecution. Under this law, there is a provision to give citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian refugees, but the Muslim community has been excluded from this law. For this reason, this law is being opposed. People opposing the law allege that it is discriminating based on religion, which is against the Indian Constitution. However, the government argues that there is no provision in the CAA to take away anyone's citizenship and the government has clearly said that the CAA law will not be withdrawn.
