The Union Health Ministry has decided that children below 12 years of age will not be given the corona vaccine. However, no order has been issued in this regard yet. According to sources, this decision has been taken because of the current situation. Currently, the vaccine is not being given to children below 12 years of age in the country.
Sources are also telling that the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) is going to advise the government that only children below the age of 12 years should be given the vaccine, who already have a serious disease.
Two companies sought approval from the government
Two vaccine makers Serum Institute of India and Biological-E have sought approval from the central government for the vaccine for children below the age of 12 years. The companies have also informed the government of the results of trials on children.
Infected children do not have severe symptoms
The Health Ministry discussed these proposals with experts. In this, it was found that children below 12 years of age got infected during all three waves of corona in the country, but they did not show serious symptoms. Therefore it is not necessary to vaccinate them.
Children between 12 and 14 years of age are getting the vaccine from March 16 in the country. 1.6 crore children have already received the first dose. At the same time, 5.71 crore children in the age group of 15 to 17 years have been given the first dose.
The expert said - children do not get sick from infection
Dr. Sanjay Rai of the Community Medicine Department of Delhi AIIMS said that before giving the vaccine to children, a scientific basis should be told. Nowhere in the world do young children need the vaccine. Because the vaccine protects against the severity of the infection, not the infection. So far the children have not shown serious signs of infection. The deaths of children from Corona are also almost zero. So it would not be right to vaccinate them.
Former ICMR scientist Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar said that even children 12 to 14 years of age should be given the vaccine, who have some serious disease. The rest of the kids don't need it. Anyway, it is almost clear that the vaccine does not prevent infection, but reduces the severity of the disease after infection. Then what is the need of giving the vaccine to children?
