US President Donald Trump and 20 other top world leaders will attend a peace summit on the Gaza issue in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also invited by Egypt to attend the summit, but he will not attend. The US President has already departed the United States on Air Force One. He will first travel to Israel and then return to Egypt. This is his first visit since the announcement of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement. Before departing for Israel, Trump described the visit as very special. Trump said, "This is going to be a very special time... Everyone is very excited about this moment. This has never happened before. Usually, if one side is happy, the other is angry. But this time, everyone is happy together."
It is noteworthy that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will co-chair this peace summit with US President Trump. During this meeting, ways to end the war in the Gaza Strip and bring lasting peace to West Asia will be discussed. This summit will take place just days after the first phase of President Trump's Gaza Peace Plan comes into effect. In addition to Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also attend the summit. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan will represent India.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One
US President Donald Trump spoke to reporters on Air Force One before departing for his Middle East tour. He said that this visit will unite the countries of the region and prove to be a major step towards lasting peace. He said, "We are going to make everyone happy. Everyone is happy...whether Jewish, Muslim, or Arab. After Israel, we are going to Egypt, where I will meet with the leaders of very powerful, large, and wealthy countries. And everyone is in favor of this agreement."
The War Is Over
During this time, when Trump was asked whether the war between Israel and Hamas was over, Trump responded briefly, saying, "Yes, the war is over, and I'm confident the ceasefire will hold." He added, "I think it will last. There are many reasons. People are tired... It's been going on for centuries, and now they want to see it end."
"This is the eighth war I've resolved."
Further speaking to reporters, Trump again described himself as a war pacifier. Trump said this was the eighth war he'd resolved. He also said he had received news that conflict was also ongoing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and that he would address that issue when he returned. Trump said, "This will be my eighth war I've resolved. And I was told there was also a war going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I said, 'That will have to wait until I return, because I'm currently resolving another war. I'll resolve that one too when I return. Because I'm good at resolving wars.'"
He again took credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
During the talks, Trump reiterated his commitment to brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He stated that he had resolved tensions between the two countries through economic pressure. He said, "Think about India and Pakistan. I've resolved some wars solely on tariffs. I said, 'If you guys want to fight and have nuclear weapons, I'll impose 100, 150, even 200 percent tariffs on both of you.' I said, 'No, I'm doing that,' and the matter was resolved within 24 hours. If there were no tariffs, that war would never have stopped."
Trump to spend seven hours in Israel and three in Egypt
During his visit, the US President will spend less than seven hours in Israel and then stop in Egypt for about three hours before returning to Washington. After Israel, Trump will travel to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where a peace ceremony will be held this afternoon. It is here that the formal signing of the ceasefire agreement is expected, although the details of the agreement have not yet been made public.
