
Following its resounding victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party is scheduled to hold a meeting today. During this meeting, a final decision regarding the name of the state's next Chief Minister will be taken. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also be present at the meeting.
Home Minister Amit Shah will meet with the newly elected MLAs today in his capacity as an observer. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will also be present during this session as a co-observer. According to party sources, the meeting is scheduled to take place at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata at 4:00 PM. It is during this very meeting that the leader of the legislative party—who will subsequently become the state's new Chief Minister—will be elected.
Swearing-in Ceremony at Parade Ground Tomorrow
State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya announced on Wednesday that the swearing-in ceremony for the new government in the state would be held on May 9. He stated that the event would commence at 10:00 AM at Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground. A large number of party workers and senior leaders are expected to attend the occasion. According to party sources, the swearing-in ceremony will be attended by the Prime Minister, all Chief Ministers from the NDA and BJP-ruled states, and Union Ministers. Two dozen ministers are also expected to take the oath of office.
West Bengal Assembly Election Results
Following a two-phase voting process for the Assembly elections in West Bengal, the counting of votes took place on May 4. The Trinamool Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the polls. With this victory, the Trinamool Congress's 15-year-long rule in the state has come to an end. In terms of statistics, the TMC secured a mere 80 seats, whereas in the previous election, the party had won 215 seats on its own. Conversely, the BJP—which had won only 77 seats in the previous election—delivered a strong performance this time, capturing 207 seats.
