E20 Petrol Explained: Government Clears the Air on Ethanol Blending, Answers All Major Questions

Posted on 4th Jul 2026 10:59 am by rohit kumar

The Central government has dismissed several viral claims surrounding E20 ethanol-blended petrol, clarifying that the fuel is scientifically tested, environmentally regulated, and safe for compatible vehicles. In a detailed 10-point clarification, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas rejected allegations related to excessive water consumption, engine damage, invalid insurance, and environmental risks.

The government emphasized that India's 20% ethanol blending (E20) programme is backed by scientific research, international experience, and extensive testing conducted by leading automotive and research institutions.

Government Rejects Viral Water Usage Claims

The Ministry refuted social media claims suggesting that producing one litre of ethanol requires 10,000 litres of water.

According to the government, ethanol distilleries typically consume only 3–5 litres of water for every litre of ethanol produced. Modern production facilities are also increasingly adopting water recycling technologies to minimize consumption.

The Ministry further clarified that:

Surplus rice is used only after meeting national food security requirements and obtaining government approval.

More than 40% of India's ethanol is produced from maize, which requires significantly less irrigation than paddy.

Is E20 Petrol Safe for Vehicles?

The government rejected claims that E20 petrol is an untested fuel.

It noted that ethanol-blended fuel has been successfully used for decades in countries including the United States, Brazil, Canada, Thailand, Japan, and several European nations.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) conducted extensive vehicle trials, including:

40,000 km testing on passenger cars

20,000 km testing on two-wheelers

The studies found no major impact on engine performance or drivability, while only marginal changes in fuel efficiency were observed. Vehicles specifically designed for E20 can also benefit from ethanol's higher octane rating, improving combustion efficiency.

Does E20 Damage Engines or Void Vehicle Warranty?

The Ministry also rejected allegations that E20 fuel damages engines or corrodes vehicle components.

Studies conducted jointly by:

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)

Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP)

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)

found no significant compatibility issues with metal or plastic engine components.

Officials noted that older vehicles may require replacement of certain rubber parts before prolonged E20 use.

The government also clarified that vehicle warranties and insurance remain valid for vehicles certified or approved for E20 fuel, as confirmed by automobile manufacturers and insurance companies.

Environmental Benefits of Ethanol Blending

The Ministry highlighted several environmental safeguards and economic gains under the ethanol blending programme.

Ethanol plants operate under:

Mandatory environmental clearances

Groundwater regulations

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems

According to government data, since 2014-15, the programme has delivered significant benefits:

Saved over ₹1.9 lakh crore in foreign exchange by reducing crude oil imports.

Enabled payments of over ₹1.6 lakh crore to farmers.

Reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 930 lakh metric tonnes.

Cut crude oil imports by over 310 lakh metric tonnes.

India Achieves E20 Target Ahead of Schedule

India achieved its target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol ahead of the December 2025 deadline.

The ethanol blending rate has increased dramatically from around 1.5% in 2013-14 to 20%, making India one of the world's fastest-growing ethanol blending economies.

The country's installed ethanol production capacity has now reached nearly 2,000 crore litres, while procurement is expected to cross 1,200 crore litres during the 2025-26 ethanol supply year.

The government maintains that the E20 programme is a key step toward improving India's energy security, reducing fossil fuel imports, supporting farmers, and lowering carbon emissions while ensuring vehicle safety through scientific testing and regulatory oversight.
