New Delhi, April 11 (IANS) The Election Commission Friday directed state and district-level authorities to initiate prompt legal action in case of any violation of model code of conduct by candidates while campaigning for the general election.
In a letter to all district and state-level local authorities, the commission said that inflammatory and provocative speeches were being made by some political leaders of different political parties in violation of the model code of conduct.
"Since such speeches have the potential to vitiate the peaceful, free and fair election process, it is imperative on the part of the district and state-level authorities to initiative prompt legal action without any delay," the letter said.
The EC further said that it had noticed "lack of prompt action in certain cases" and asked authorities to ensure video recording and close monitoring of all election rallies.
