Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that his government is considering full implementation of the 13A amendment to the constitution. The amendment is part of a 1987 agreement between India and Sri Lanka to give wider rights to Tamils. Their participation in power has to be ensured. India has said that it is necessary to give rights to Tamils for social solidarity in Sri Lanka. India has been pressuring Sri Lanka for years to implement this agreement signed between the then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President Jayawardene in 1987.
Social Justice Commission will be formed soon
Speaking on the occasion of the Thai Pongal festival celebrated by the Tamil community, President Wickremesinghe said, Social Justice Commission will be set up soon. This commission will collect information about the expectations of the people of all the communities living in the country and will give its report to the government. Based on this report, the government will take steps to transfer the rights. This work will be done without discrimination. This statement of President Wickremesinghe came before the visit of Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to Sri Lanka.
Jaishankar can raise the issue of Tamil
It is believed that Jaishankar may raise the issue of the rights of Tamil minorities living in Sri Lanka during his visit. Sri Lankan Tamils often express dissatisfaction with the discrimination they face. Tamil parties have also been expressing disappointment over the government's stand.
