New Delhi, March 11 (IANS) The government on Wednesday objected to members of the Opposition frequently giving notices for adjournment motion over various issues in the Lok Sabha.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that giving notices for suspension of question hour almost every day would dilute the importance of such notices.
"Question Hour belongs to members of the house and adjournment motion notices should be taken up only based on the merit of the issue," Naidu said.
His comments led to protests by the Opposition, especially the Congress.
Congress members, including Jyotiraditya Scindia and K.C. Venugopal, protested against his statements, saying that giving adjournment motion notices was part of parliamentary practice.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also told the Opposition: "You have made it a practice of regularly giving notices for adjournment motion."
Some notices were given by the members on Wednesday also. They were rejected by the speaker, who asked them to raise the issues during zero hour.
