
Powered by Sai Sudharsan’s robust batting—following a lethal bowling performance led by Jason Holder—Gujarat Titans secured a magnificent four-wicket victory against Punjab Kings. In the match played on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Punjab—having lost the toss and been put in to bat first—posted a total of 163 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs, aided by a half-century knock from Suryansh Shedge. In reply, Gujarat chased down the target, scoring 167 runs for the loss of six wickets in 19.5 overs to claim the match.
Gujarat’s Strong Position
This marks a consecutive defeat for Punjab in the ongoing IPL season; the team had previously been defeated by Rajasthan Royals. Currently, the team sits at the top of the points table with 13 points and a Net Run Rate of +0.855. Meanwhile, Gujarat remains at the fifth spot with 12 points, having won six out of their ten matches. With this victory, Gujarat has successfully taken a firm step towards the playoffs. There are now four teams tied with 12 points each; alongside Gujarat, this group includes RCB, Hyderabad, and Rajasthan. The teams finishing in the top four positions will qualify for the IPL playoffs.
Gujarat’s Innings
Chasing a target of 164 runs, Gujarat suffered a major blow early on when Captain Shubman Gill (5) was dismissed with the team score at 16. Subsequently, Sai Sudharsan provided stability to the team by stitching together a 53-run partnership for the second wicket with Jos Buttler, spanning 40 deliveries. Buttler was eventually dismissed after scoring 26 runs off 22 balls. From this juncture, Sai Sudharsan took charge of the innings. He guided the team closer to victory by forming a 25-run partnership with Nishant Sindhu (15) and a 30-run stand with Washington Sundar. Sudharsan returned to the pavilion after scoring 57 runs off 41 balls, following which Sundar played an unbeaten knock of 40 runs off 23 balls to seal a thrilling victory for the team. From the opposing camp, Arshdeep Singh and Vijaykumar Vyshak claimed two wickets each, while Marco Jansen and Marcus Stoinis took one wicket apiece.
Punjab’s Innings
Earlier, Punjab suffered two consecutive blows in the very first over: losing Priyansh Arya (2) on the second ball and Cooper Connolly (0) on the third. The Kings had lost two wickets with just two runs on the board. Subsequently, Prabhsimran Singh attempted to steady the innings. Forming a 33-run partnership off 29 balls for the second wicket with captain Shreyas Iyer (19), Prabhsimran guided the team to a total of 35 runs. Prabhsimran departed after scoring 15 runs, following which the team slumped to 47 runs for the loss of five wickets.
From this juncture, Marcus Stoinis, in partnership with Suryansh Shedge, added 79 runs off 44 balls to propel the team’s total to 126. Suryansh returned to the pavilion after scoring 57 runs off 29 balls, while Stoinis played an innings of 40 runs off 31 balls. Marco Jansen contributed 20 runs to this innings. For the opposition, Jason Holder claimed four wickets for 24 runs, while Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada took two wickets each. Rashid Khan secured one wicket.
