Gas prices have undergone a significant change right from the very first day of May. Oil marketing companies have revised the prices of gas cylinders; this move will have a direct impact on small business owners, commercial users, and individuals living away from home who rely on ‘Chhotu’ cylinders.
While the price of the 19-kg commercial gas cylinder has witnessed a massive surge, the cost of the smaller 5-kg cylinder (known as ‘Chhotu’) has also gone up. However, there is a silver lining: the price of the standard 14.2-kg domestic gas cylinder—used in approximately 330 million households across the country—remains unchanged. In this article, let us explore the new pricing details for both commercial cylinders and ‘Chhotu’ cylinders.
Major Hike in Commercial Gas Cylinder Prices
The price of the 19-kg commercial gas cylinder has been hiked by a substantial ₹993 nationwide.
Following this increase, the price of a commercial cylinder in Delhi has risen from ₹2,078.50 to ₹3,071.50.
This price hike will have a direct impact on restaurants, dhabas (roadside eateries), and catering services, potentially making dining out more expensive.
Prices Rise for 5-kg ‘Chhotu’ Cylinders Too
Alongside commercial cylinders, the price of the 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder has also been increased by ₹261.
Since these smaller cylinders do not fall under the ambit of government subsidies, fluctuations in the international market have a direct bearing on their prices.
This price hike will place an additional financial burden on students and migrant workers who rely on these small cylinders for their cooking needs.
Relief Continues for Domestic Consumers
There has been no change in the price of the 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, offering significant relief to average households. In the capital, Delhi, domestic gas cylinders remain available at their previous price of ₹913.
Why have gas prices risen?
Rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia (involving Israel, Iran, and the US) have led to volatility in international crude oil and energy prices.
India imports a significant portion of its LPG requirements; consequently, domestic commercial rates are directly linked to international benchmarks.
This is the reason behind the sharp surge in gas prices this month.
