Gold Price Today: Gold Rises ₹606 to ₹1.53 Lakh, Silver Jumps ₹2,406; Check Latest Rates

Posted on 8th Sep 2026 02:54 pm by rohit kumar

Gold and silver prices rose on September 8, 2026, keeping precious-metal buyers and investors focused on the latest bullion rates. According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), 24-carat gold is around the ₹1.53 lakh per 10-gram level, while silver is around ₹2.34 lakh per kilogram.

Retail prices can be different from IBJA benchmark rates because jewellery prices also depend on city, purity, taxes, making charges and local market conditions. IBJA's published bullion rates are quoted without 3% GST and making charges.

Why Do Gold Prices Vary From City to City?

Gold prices are not always identical across Indian cities. Here are four major factors behind the difference:

1. Transportation and Security Costs

Gold has to be transported from bullion centres to jewellers in different cities. Transportation, insurance and security expenses can influence the final price, particularly when the distance is greater.

2. Purchase Volume

Demand and purchase volumes differ from one region to another. Higher jewellery consumption can influence how dealers and jewellers source bullion and negotiate wholesale prices.

3. Local Jewellery Associations

Local market conditions, including supply and demand, can influence jewellery rates. Dealers may also follow rates prevailing in their respective city or regional bullion markets.

4. Old Stock and Purchase Cost

Jewellers may hold gold purchased at different prices. The cost at which inventory was acquired can therefore influence the rate at which jewellery is eventually sold.

Gold Has Become Around ₹20,000 Costlier This Year

Gold has witnessed substantial volatility in 2026. Compared with the roughly ₹1.33 lakh per 10 grams level at the end of 2025, gold is now around ₹1.53 lakh, representing an increase of about ₹20,000 per 10 grams.

The metal has also touched significantly higher levels during the year. Silver has similarly experienced sharp swings, with its price moving substantially above the levels seen at the end of 2025.

Current domestic prices are also being influenced by international market movements, currency fluctuations and geopolitical developments. Reuters reported that global gold prices were slightly lower on September 8 as investors assessed US inflation data and the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates.

Gold Prices Can Differ Even Within the Same City

The price quoted by a jewellery shop should not be compared directly with the IBJA bullion benchmark without considering additional costs.

For example, the final jewellery bill can include:

Gold value based on purity and weight

Making charges

3% GST

Other applicable charges

IBJA specifically notes that its published rates do not include GST and making charges.

3 Things to Check Before Buying Gold Jewellery

1. Buy BIS-Hallmarked Gold

Always check that the jewellery carries the required BIS hallmark and verify the hallmark details before making a purchase. Hallmarking helps establish the purity of the gold.

2. Compare the Gold Rate

Before purchasing, check the prevailing rate for the specific purity—such as 24K, 22K or 18K—and compare it with rates from multiple reliable sources.

Remember that bullion benchmark rates and the final jewellery price are not necessarily the same.

3. Understand Making Charges

Making charges are added to the cost of converting gold into jewellery. These charges can vary considerably between jewellers and designs.

Ask the jeweller for a clear breakup of:

Gold price

Jewellery weight

Making charges

GST

Any other applicable charges

Comparing these components can help buyers understand the actual cost of the jewellery rather than looking only at the headline gold rate.
