The way father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, is respected all over the world, in the same way, Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, has also been respected. Hence today, his birth anniversary on the 18th of July is celebrated annually as International Nelson Mandela Day. On this day people are encouraged to protect the peace, apartheid, poverty, and human rights. This year the theme of this day is 'It's in your hands'.

The importance of International Nelson Mandela Day can be understood from the fact that it has been officially recognized by the United Nations. The United Nations General Assembly had announced to celebrate this day in November 2009. After this, this day has been formally celebrated for the first time on 18 July 2010. Since then till now this day is celebrated every year on 18th July.

 

who was Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. His childhood name was Roliharahala. During primary education, a teacher gave him the name Nelson, after which he was known by this name. He was recognized worldwide for peace, abolition of apartheid, and freedom. Due to this, he spent 27 years in an African prison. He has been awarded the world's most prestigious prize Nobel in the year 1993 for laying a new foundation for democracy in South Africa. Nelson Mandela passed away on 5 December 2013.

The first International Nelson Mandela Day was celebrated on 18 July 2009 in New York.

 

On 10 November 2009, the resolution to celebrate this day was passed by the United Nations General Assembly.

 

Nelson Mandela married Graca Machel at the age of 80.

 

On 10 May 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first black President of South Africa.

 

His tenure lasted till 14 June 1999.

 

In the year 1944, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress and there he played an important role in forming the 'ANC Youth League'.

 

In 1952, he studied law and after that, he established the country's first black law firm in Johannesburg.
