India legend Sunil Gavaskar has termed Royal Challengers Bangalore's decision to appoint Faf du Plessis as the captain for the Indian Premier League 2022 as a brilliant decision. Having said that the leadership experience of the South African legend will come in handy for the former finalist.

RCB on Saturday picked Faf du Plessis as Virat Kohli's successor. Faf du Plessis, who was a part of Chennai Super Kings till IPL 2021, was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 7 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Speculations were rife that Glenn Maxwell might be given the captaincy role after being retained by RCB. However, RCB handed over the reins to Du Plessis in a glittering ceremony on Saturday.

Speaking to Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar said that Faf du Plessis has a lot of experience leading the national team and explained how he brought players together and helped the Proteas rise to the top of world cricket.

Gavaskar said, "The experience of captaincy, you see a lot of leadership quality in Faf du Plessis. I am not surprised at all. Remember, he led South African cricket. There was a time in South African cricket when there was a bit of turmoil. There was chaos. He managed to bring the team together and take South Africa to the top. A brilliant decision by RCB to hand over the captaincy to Faf du Plessis.

"There is no doubt about it (in the absence of AB de Villiers). Faf du Plessis will open the batting. He will want to lead from the front, show the way. These are exciting times for RCB," he said.

"Don't think for a moment because Kohli is not the captain, his performance is going to go down. We have seen him in Tests even now, how he is trying to help him with Rohit Sharma all the time. He wants That his team wins, whether he is the captain or not. So that's what he will do with RCB."
