EPFO UAN Activation Rules Changed: Portal Access Ends, UMANG App Face Authentication Becomes Mandatory

Posted on 4th Jul 2026 03:07 pm by rohit kumar

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a revamped Unified Member Portal after a week-long technical upgrade, introducing major changes to the way PF members access key services. One of the biggest updates is the discontinuation of UAN activation and allotment through the EPFO portal, with these services now shifting exclusively to the UMANG App using face authentication technology.

The upgraded system is designed to improve security, accelerate service delivery, and reduce the risk of fraud as EPFO continues its push toward a fully digital, mobile-first ecosystem.

EPFO Portal Returns After Major System Upgrade

The EPFO Unified Member Portal remained offline from the night of June 26, 2026, as the organisation carried out database migration and infrastructure upgrades.

With the portal now live again, several backend improvements have been implemented to provide faster, more secure, and reliable digital services for over seven crore EPF subscribers.

UAN Activation No Longer Available on EPFO Portal

A significant change introduced with the upgrade is the removal of the UAN activation and new UAN allotment options from the EPFO website.

Going forward, members must complete these services through the UMANG App, where identity verification will be carried out using Face Authentication Technology (FAT).

According to EPFO, the move is intended to strengthen digital security and prevent unauthorized access or fraudulent activities involving PF accounts.

How to Activate UAN Through the UMANG App

Members can activate or generate their Universal Account Number (UAN) by following these steps:

Download the UMANG App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Open the app and navigate to EPFO Services.

Select 'UAN Services through Face Auth'.

select either UAN Activation or UAN Allotment.

Verify your registered mobile number.

Complete face authentication to activate or generate your UAN.

Members without an existing UAN can also create and link a new UAN through this process.

Recovering a Forgotten UAN Is Now Easier

EPFO has also simplified the process for retrieving a lost or forgotten UAN.

Subscribers only need to:

Enter their registered mobile number.

Upload a valid identity or address proof.

Verify the OTP sent to their mobile.

Retrieve their UAN instantly after successful verification.

The streamlined process reduces paperwork and speeds up access to EPF services.

Death Claim Process Continues Through the EPFO Portal

While UAN services have shifted to the UMANG App, nominees and legal beneficiaries can continue submitting death claims and pension-related claims through the EPFO portal.

Applicants must ensure:

Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active.

Member's death certificate is uploaded.

Beneficiary's birth certificate is provided.

Bank account proof, such as a cancelled cheque or passbook, is submitted.

EPFO has also specified that:

Documents must be uploaded in PDF format.

Each file must not exceed 2 MB.

File names should not contain spaces.

Face Authentication Strengthens Security

The introduction of face authentication marks a major step in EPFO's digital transformation strategy.

By replacing traditional verification methods with biometric authentication, EPFO aims to:

Improve account security.

Reduce identity fraud.

Speed up UAN-related services.

Deliver a seamless mobile-first experience.

The move aligns with the government's broader vision of expanding secure digital public services.

EPFO's Digital Transformation Gains Momentum

The latest portal upgrade reflects EPFO's continued efforts to modernize its services while strengthening cybersecurity. By shifting sensitive services like UAN activation to biometric verification through the UMANG App, the organisation aims to provide faster, safer, and more transparent services for millions of PF subscribers across India.
