IPL 2026: Poor Team Performance—These Four Captains Are in the Crosshairs! Will the Axe Fall After This Season? Will They Be Stripped of Their Responsibilities?

In IPL 2026, the performance of several teams has fallen short of expectations, and this appears to be having a direct impact on their captains. From Hardik Pandya to Rishabh Pant, there are four captains whose positions could be at risk ahead of IPL 2027. All these captains face a singular challenge: delivering positive results—something their respective teams have failed to achieve thus far. In the world of T20 cricket, performance is the ultimate determinant, and a team’s showing could very well jeopardize their captaincy. It now remains to be seen whether these players will face the axe or manage to successfully retain their leadership roles.

Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians)

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya returned to the team in 2024, but he has not yet fully won over the fans’ trust. He faced booing during home matches, and his individual performance has been inconsistent. Having failed to steer the team forward in the race for the title, the management may look to find a new face to lead the side ahead of IPL 2027. Given that Suryakumar Yadav is currently going through a patch of poor form himself, entrusting the captaincy to him would be a risky proposition.

Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Kolkata Knight Riders won the title in 2024 under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer; however, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, the team has subsequently failed to replicate that success. The team’s performance witnessed a decline in both 2025 and 2026, raising questions regarding Rahane’s strategies and aggressive approach. Rinku Singh is being viewed as a potential alternative. Alternatively, KKR might focus their efforts during the auction ahead of IPL 2027 on acquiring a capable captain.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)

Taking over the captaincy at Chennai Super Kings following MS Dhoni’s tenure was never going to be an easy task. While Ruturaj Gaikwad has certainly delivered some commendable performances, the team’s consistent run of poor results has cast a shadow of doubt over his leadership. The failure to chase down high scores and the pressure stemming from a weak middle order are weighing directly on the captain. Consequently, his position is now at risk.

Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants)

Following KL Rahul’s departure, the Lucknow Super Giants acquired Rishabh Pant for a sum of ₹27 crore and appointed him as captain. Expectations were high that he would steer the team in a new direction; however, consistent poor performance and the team’s languishing position at the bottom of the table have become a cause for concern. The team has been hovering at the lower end of the points table for the past two seasons. While the bowling unit has been performing well, the batting lineup has been a complete failure. The playing combination and batting order are being shuffled in every single match. Under these circumstances, Pant’s captaincy appears to be in jeopardy.

A Common Problem for All These Captains

There is one common thread binding these four captains: a lack of results. Whether it be failed run chases, inconsistent batting, or strategic errors, the teams are failing to perform up to expectations. In a league as competitive as the IPL, such a situation cannot be sustained for long. Even if these players are not dropped from their respective squads, they could certainly be stripped of the captaincy. Should a change occur—with the exception of KKR—the other franchises already have viable alternatives ready to step in. The command could be handed over to Suryakumar Yadav in place of Hardik, Rinku Singh in place of Rahane, Sanju Samson in place of Gaikwad, or Nicholas Pooran or Mitchell Marsh in place of Pant.

Retention Will Determine the Future

The player retention process preceding the 2027 IPL season will ultimately determine the future of these captains. The franchises will have to make a crucial decision: whether to continue placing their trust in their current captains or to opt for a fresh start. History serves as a witness that in the IPL, franchises rarely exercise much patience when the coveted trophy remains elusive.
